Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Stigma explores the persistent social force of stigma, which has been used throughout history to dehumanise and oppress individuals and communities. Imogen Tyler offers a radical reinterpretation of stigma as a political tool employed by states to enforce coercion. By tracing the history of stigma from ancient times to contemporary issues such as discrimination against Muslims, refugees, and the poor, the book reveals how stigma secures the interests of powerful elites and highlights forgotten histories of resistance. These insights provide a critical understanding of the rise of authoritarian governments today.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Stigma is a corrosive social force by which individuals and communities throughout history have been systematically dehumanised, scapegoated, and oppressed. From the literal stigmatizing (tattooing) of criminals in ancient Greece, to modern-day discrimination against Muslims, refugees, and the 'undeserving poor', stigma has long been a means of securing the interests of powerful elites.

In this radical reconceptualisation, Tyler precisely and passionately outlines the political function of stigma as an instrument of state coercion. Through an original social and economic reframing of the history of stigma, Tyler reveals stigma as a political practice, illuminating previously forgotten histories of resistance against stigmatisation. She boldly argues that these histories provide invaluable insights for understanding the rise of authoritarian forms of government today.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Praised by CHOICE as a recommended read for undergraduates to faculty, the book is noted for its clear historical analysis and contemporary relevance, covering topics like race, poverty, and the refugee crisis with autobiographical elements. Satnam Virdee of the University of Glasgow commends it as a profoundly original, intellectually rich, and elegantly written work that gives voice to the dehumanised. It is described as devastating and brilliant, critically addressing austerity and border regimes.
