Book Hero Halloween Dress Up & Board Game Night

This Halloween Eve, we decided it was the perfect excuse for a team dress-up day and another board game night! It's been FOUR months since our last one, so we were definitely overdue for an evening of pizza, board games, and team building!

Our dress-up day was awesome, and everyone really got into the spirit of things! Alastair came as a doctor (of course), starting his morning in his fancy pants and shiny shoes before changing into his scrubs for the rest of the day.

Shirl dressed up as "One Wish Willow", complete with some incredibly realistic fake blood. So realistic, in fact, that when she went to pick up our pizzas for dinner, she'd completely forgotten about her makeup and had a few other customers genuinely concerned for her well-being!

Hannah and Marnie arrived as a pair of spooky twins, and they looked awesome. Siobhan swapped her warehouse clothes for her Little Red Riding Hood outfit (twice!) - apparently no capes allowed in the warehouse…despite us all being heroes. Serena went all out as Disgust from Inside Out, including painting her face green. The look of disgust on her face when people would suggest she was Shrek, Fiona or Elphaba was hilarious. Lizzy and Eve came as witches, and Tim joined in the fun dressed as Cobra Kai.

Halloween Board Game Night with the Team 🎃

We have been really keen to do another board game night since our last one, but with moving warehouses and being super busy with the aftermath of that, it took a little longer than we had planned. It was well worth the wait, though! Shirl and Roopa organised the drinks, snacks, and pizza, and we had a plethora of games to play.

We also had so many new faces join in, including Renee, Theresa, Liam, Serena, and Dom. Jade even stuck around for the first round of games! We were all so excited to introduce them to the games we really enjoy playing, and after recently convincing Serena that board games are fun and totally worth investing in, I was excited for her to experience all these other games too.

For our board games, we started out nice and easy with a couple of rounds of Poetry for Neanderthals. There’s nothing like introducing people to board games by bonking them on the head with a club! It was a great game to start with because even those of us who have played it heaps still manage to mess up, so the newbies weren't alone. I think my favourite thing about the game is that it’s so easy to learn, mess up, and still have so much fun.

Then we played a quick round of Herd Mentality. Man, that game was absolute chaos! You basically have to try to get the same answers as the majority of the group, and the person with the unique answer gets the pink cow of shame. And as long as you have the pink cow of shame in your herd, you can’t win.

It’s a great game for being the odd one out or starting to think about the questions in terms of what someone else would answer, rather than what you want to say. Then, once you’re done with your answer, you have permission to moo at the people still writing in the hopes that it will distract them enough that they write something else. I’m not totally sure about the mooing rule, but it was fun having us all moo at the people taking their time to write!

After Herd Mentality, we started so many rounds of Ultimate Werewolf. As a note, I would recommend looking at the rules and card allocations before you turn off the lights and switch to ambient lighting, because I’m not totally sure I got our villagers-to-werewolves ratio right. But it felt correct for the number of players we had! The funniest thing about this game is how much our team absolutely loses it and starts yelling and throwing accusations around.

My absolute favourite thing about this night, though, was Liam saying that he was having fun with our board games! He’s even asked if we could play Werewolf every day! I call that a win for board games. Plus, he suggested we start our own team D&D group, and we are all so keen!

It was an epic night, and I can’t thank Dylan enough for bringing together such an amazing group of people who get along so well that we can have awesome nights like this, with people leaving and asking when we’ll be doing another one.

We’re so lucky to have the team that we do, and I can’t wait for our next board game night when more people can join us! (I might need to find us some bigger party games!)
