Lucky Girl by Mary Rickert is a haunting tale of solitude and the unexpected bonds formed during the festive season.

Ro, a struggling writer, knows all too well the pain and solitude that holiday festivities can awaken. When she meets four people at the local diner—all of them strangers and as lonely as Ro is—she invites them to an impromptu Christmas dinner.

When that party seems in danger of an early end, she suggests they each tell a ghost story. A tale that's seasonally appropriate. However, Ro will come to learn that the horrors hidden in a Christmas tale—or one's past—can never be tamed once unleashed.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Lucky Girl is praised as a masterful blend of horror subgenres wrapped in a wintry, melancholic tale. CrimeReads highlights its layering of multiple horror styles like unwrapping nested gifts, while Locus commends the novella’s elegantly complex narrative and perfectly distilled dread. Renowned authors such as Laird Barron, Daryl Gregory, and Christopher Golden celebrate it as a beautifully disturbing, ice-cold, and dread-filled Christmas horror story that resonates beyond the season.
