Liquid Times by Zygmunt Bauman examines the shift from 'solid' to 'liquid' modernity, where traditional social structures no longer provide stable frameworks for individual lives. Bauman explores how this transformation forces people to live fragmented, short-term lives, constantly adapting to uncertainty without long-term commitments.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The passage from ‘solid’ to ‘liquid’ modernity has created a new and unprecedented setting for individual life pursuits, confronting individuals with a series of challenges never before encountered. Social forms and institutions no longer have enough time to solidify and cannot serve as frames of reference for human actions and long-term life plans, so individuals have to find other ways to organise their lives.

They have to splice together an unending series of short-term projects and episodes that don’t add up to the kind of sequence to which concepts like ‘career’ and ‘progress’ could meaningfully be applied. Such fragmented lives require individuals to be flexible and adaptable – to be constantly ready and willing to change tactics at short notice, to abandon commitments and loyalties without regret and to pursue opportunities according to their current availability.

In liquid modernity, the individual must act, plan actions, and calculate the likely gains and losses of acting (or failing to act) under conditions of endemic uncertainty.

Zygmunt Bauman’s brilliant writings on liquid modernity have altered the way we think about the contemporary world. In this short book he explores the sources of the endemic uncertainty which shapes our lives today and, in so doing, he provides the reader with a brief and accessible introduction to his highly original account, developed at greater length in his previous books, of life in our liquid modern times.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Satyajit Das, writing for Willmot.com, praises Liquid Times alongside Bauman's Living on Borrowed Times for offering profound insights into post-modern life and the underlying social and philosophical shifts that contribute to global financial crises. He calls the ideas in these works fascinating.

Unde malum—from where does evil come? That is the question that has plagued humankind ever since Eve, seduced by the serpent, tempted Adam to taste the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Throughout history, the awareness of good and evil has always been linked to the awareness of choice and to the freedom and responsibility...

  • Postmodern Ethics
Zygmunt Bauman's powerful and persuasive study of the postmodern perspective on ethics is particularly welcome. For Bauman the great issues of ethics have lost none of their topicality: they simply need to be seen, and dealt with, in a wholly new way. Our era, he suggests, may actually represent a dawning, rather than a twilight, for ethics.

  • Culture and Art
The sociological imagination and the artistic imagination have been historically intertwined, at once reciprocal and conflicting, complementary and tensional. This connection is nowhere more apparent than in the work of Zygmunt Bauman. His conception and practice of sociology were always infused with a literary and artistic sensibility. He wrote extensively on the relationship between sociology and the arts, and especially...

  • My Life in Fragments
Zygmunt Bauman was one of the great social thinkers of our time: inventor of the idea of liquid modernity, he transformed our way of thinking about the social conditions shaping our lives today. His own life was shaped by the great social forces that scarred the second half of the twentieth century – war, communism, antisemitism, forced migration. His work...

  • This is not a Diary
This is not a Diary: while these observations were recorded in autumn 2010 and spring 2011 in the form of dated entries, they are not a personal reflection but an attempt to capture signs of our times in their movement—possibly at birth, at a stage when they are still barely perceptible, and in any case before they have matured into...

  • In Praise of Literature
In this new book, In Praise of Literature, Zygmunt Bauman and Riccardo Mazzeo examine the contentious issue of the relation between literature (and the arts in general) and sociology (or, more generally, a branch of the humanities claiming scientific status). While many commentators see literature and sociology as radically different vocations, Bauman and Mazzeo argue that they are bound together...

  • Management in a Liquid Modern World
Management has been one of the driving forces of the last century, indeed an idea and a language that colonised most other institutions, areas of human activity, and walks of life. Even those that had until recently been regarded as completely unmanageable, such as art, academia, and creativity. Some it supported and others it destroyed, but there are few areas...

  • Sketches in the Theory of Culture
Sketches in the Theory of Culture is a remarkable work by all measures. Written by Zygmunt Bauman when he was still a professor in Poland, and originally intended for publication in 1968, it was suppressed by the Polish government during the wave of repression following the protests in March of that year. For decades, it was thought to be lost....
