A bold and brilliant contemporary reimagining of the six wives of Henry VIII. What does it mean to love – and leave – a Henry? And how do you become the main character of your own life, when you're cast opposite the anointed star?

Henry by Caroline Wray is a story told with relentless intelligence, pondering how much we will do, and how far we will go, to be loved. Wray is an unsparing observer of the human heart. — Susan Choi, Women's Prize and Booker Prize shortlisted author of Flashlight

SIX WIVES. SIX LIVES. THE WORLD DOESN'T REVOLVE AROUND HENRY.

New Orleans, 1966. Eighteen-year-old Lina Aragon, reluctant Queen of Mardi Gras, dances with the local golden boy, unknowingly stepping onto the path that will rewrite her future from dutiful Catholic missionary to devoted wife.

New York, 1982. Anne, a headstrong ballerina, has a drink with a married real estate tycoon and embarks on the affair of a lifetime.

England, 2024. In a crumbling castle, reality TV producer Hannah Cleves orchestrates twelve women competing for one man’s affection. But her illicit romance with Katy Howard, a contestant, resurrects memories of her first love and evangelical youth in Mississippi.

Then there’s hard-nosed Jane and end-of-life health aide Parker. Together they peel back the veneer of one 'great man'. From first love to death bed, these six women orbit each other, their lives irrevocably altered by the gravitational pull of Henry… until they finally break free.

About the Author

Caroline Wray has taught creative writing as a junior lecturer at Johns Hopkins and was formerly an editorial assistant at Henry Holt and Crown. She began her research into the wives of Henry VIII a decade ago, with that material taking shape into these characters about four years ago. She grew up in Atlanta and received her BA in English from Yale and her fiction MFA from Johns Hopkins, where she won the Benjamin Sankey fellowship. Her short fiction has appeared in Gulf Coast, and she is also at work on her second book, centred around the concept of the muse.
