Hannah and I were both incredibly excited to go along to the movie premiere. Hannah is much more well-read than I am when it comes to those classics, but we both love the promise of a story with yearning, feminine experiences, and beautiful settings. As you'll see, we were not let down. There were so many beautiful touches to the premiere - with iced tea mocktails to enjoy with THE most beautiful ice cubes you have ever seen, as well as delightful macarons and a stunning backdrop for photos. We were all swooning before we even got into the movie theatre. A huge thanks to Universal for having us!
Hannah's Review:
Sense and Sensibility was achingly beautiful. Lizzy and I expected lots of yearning, some crying in the rain and a good amount of wandering through moors. This is delivered in spades. A lovely example of girlhood and sisterhood as well as the importance of second chances, Sense and Sensibility is full of the high drama of courtship and family life in upper class 18th century England. I also found that it captured Jane Austen’s wit and had much more humour than I expected! I would recommend this to anyone who loves period dramas, or anyone really, it was a great movie!
Lizzy's Review:
THE YEARNING?! No but seriously. This movie was perfection - I don't even know where to start. I loved the female relationships at the heart of the story between the sisters and their mother. I loved the landscapes and the buildings and they way that the cinematography took me straight to the English coast of the 1800s. I loved the difference between the two elder sisters, Elinor and Marianne. One who is restrained and reserved, the other who is passionate and a little wild. I loved the romance, the swoon-worthy moments as well as the ones that had me waving a fist at the miscommunications or the *almost* touching hands moments. Ugh.
The acting was exquisite. Every single character - perfection. I fell in love with them all, even the smarmy villain, Willoughby!
There were so many excellent moments (the DUEL?!) but my favourite ones were the quieter moments, the ones where there were no words but just glances, or the wind through the trees. It was a beautifully done film that has made me fall back in love with the magic of a good period romance. Maybe it's time to take a break from the spicy dark stuff and embrace the English countryside. The main thing I'm taking away from Sense and Sensibility is that the patriarchy is still stuffed, women need to take care of women, and our expectations need to be higher, we deserve so much more. #girlpower

Lizzy's Picks on Novels about Sisterhood
Sisterhood is a theme across many of my favourite novels, and it was fun to think about the books that highlight sisterhood in various forms. We'd love to hear from you about the books about sisters that you love!
