Forest of Souls by Lori M. Lee follows the journey of Sirscha Ashwyn, a young woman who comes from nothing but is determined to become something. After years of rigorous training to become the queen's next royal spy, her aspirations are unexpectedly shattered when shamans attack and kill her best friend, Saengo.

In an astonishing turn of events, Sirscha somehow restores Saengo to life. Revealed as the first lightwender in living memory, Sirscha is summoned to the domain of the Spider King. For centuries, he has wielded his influence over the Dead Wood—an ancient forest haunted by souls—to maintain peace between the kingdoms. However, with the trees now growing wild and untamed, only a lightwender can hold them in check.

As war looms on the horizon, Sirscha must master her newly awakened abilities before the rampant trees shatter the fragile peace, or worse, claim Saengo—the friend she would go to any lengths to protect.
