Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Hig, traumatised by a global catastrophe, finds solace in his dog Jasper, a cautious but helpful neighbour, and his Cessna aeroplane. His life is a careful balance of survival, limited largely to short flights to conserve fuel. When he picks up a message from another pilot, the lure of human connection drives him to risk a flight beyond his fuel range. What unfolds is a story both harrowing and life-affirming, exploring the remnants of humanity in a radically altered world.

Book Hero thinking about your next read

A post-apocalyptic novel with hope. Or in the words of Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl: "A love letter to things of beauty, big and small: a twitching trout, a can of Sprite, empathy, sex, decency and a good dog"

An Oprah Book club favourite that spreads joy, mindfulness, and hope to all who read it. Or in the words of Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl: "A dreamy, post-apocalyptic love letter to things of beauty, big and small: a twitching trout, a can of Sprite, empathy, sex, decency and a good dog"

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Hig, bereaved and traumatised after a global disaster, has three things to live for – his dog Jasper, his aggressive but helpful neighbour, and his Cessna aeroplane. He's just about surviving, so long as he only takes his beloved plane for short journeys, and saves his remaining fuel.

But, just once, he picks up a message from another pilot, and eventually the temptation to find out who else is still alive becomes irresistible. So he takes his plane over the horizon, knowing that he won't have enough fuel to get back. What follows is scarier and more life-affirming than he could have imagined. And his story, The Dog Stars, is a book unlike any you have ever read.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

The Dog Stars has been praised as a hopeful and poetic post-apocalyptic tale. Reviewers call it "magical and life-affirming" (Guardian) and "a perfectly pitched post-apocalyptic tale of survival and emotional sustenance" (Marie Claire). It is described as a "dreamy, post-apocalyptic love letter to things of beauty" (Gillian Flynn) and lauded for its believable, brutally honest narrative (Sci-Fi Now). Comparisons to The Road highlight its blend of despair and hope, with profound emotional engagement and suspense (Guardian Books of the Year, GQ).
