Book Hero thinking about your next read

From Christian Trimmer and award-winning illustrator Mike Curato comes What Are You?, a brilliant, new early reader picture book brimming with warmth and playfulness that explores questions of race and identity.

When a puggle meets two new poodle friends, there is a question the poodles feel they must ask . . .

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

When Pugs meets two new poodle friends, there are questions the poodles feel they must ask Pugs before they can play together.

Pugs has trouble answering the many questions and assumptions. The poodles reason Pugs must be good at certain things because he is part pug, and others because he is part beagle. Is that true? Or is he good at doing things because he is who he is?

Like the irresistible Elephant and Piggie, this is a brilliantly constructed early reader picture book, equally funny and thoughtful, with back matter that includes prompts to facilitate important conversation about identity between child and adult.

What Are You? by Christian Trimmer invites readers to explore these themes in a light-hearted yet meaningful way.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Booklist praises the book's inviting cartoonish illustrations and notes its thoughtful approach to familiar conversations about race and identity.
