Summary

Seventeen-year-old Delilah drops out of high school after her romance with another girl ends badly, and the bullying drives her away. Choosing chaos over cruelty, she throws herself into saving her dad's failing café, the Flywheel, while he travels overseas to 'find himself'. Alongside her mischievous best friend Charlie, Delilah faces the challenges of keeping the café afloat, avoiding Charlie's run-ins with the law, and navigating feelings for Rosa, a captivating flamenco dancer from nearby. This heartfelt debut from Erin Gough explores queer romance, family struggles, and growing up with humour and warmth.

Description

The Ampersand Prize-winner Erin Gough delivers a heart-warming debut novel about queer romance, crap parents, and finding your feet when life gets messy.

Seventeen-year-old Delilah drops out of high school when her romance with another girl goes horribly wrong and the whole school turns on her. Preferring chaos to bullying, Del makes it her mission to save her dad's crumbling cafe, the Flywheel, while he 'finds himself' overseas.

Accompanied by her charming troublemaker best friend Charlie, Del sets out to save the cafe, keep Charlie out of prison, and maybe get a date with Rosa, the beautiful flamenco dancer from across the road. But when life is messy enough as it is, can girl-on-girl romance ever have a happy ending?

This hilarious and accident-prone novel is about how to be heartbroken and how to fall in love; about rising above high-school drama and wrestling with problems that are (almost) too big. It speaks directly to teens and assures them that they're not alone, and does it all with an abundance of heart.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

‘[The Flywheel’s] got what I love in novels; great characters, relationships, a strong funny voice and a great sense of place.’ – Melina Marchetta, author of Looking for Alibrandi

‘Gough’s book is tough and textured, and it doesn’t shy away from exploring the acute awkwardness that comes with trusting your true self to others.’ – Sydney Morning Herald

‘Eminently readable prose; a relatable narrator; and a realistic, grounded lesbian romance will leave readers cheering for Delilah to find her way.’ – Booklist

‘Celebrates individuality and community.’ – Australian Book Review
