Bedridden and wracked with pain, the German poet Heinrich Heine was visited one day by an attractive young German woman, Elise Krinitz, who had come to Paris to give the poet a few sheets of music from an admirer of his poetry. Heine called her Mouche, because she wore a seal that was embellished with a fly. She visited him almost daily, read aloud to him, translated some of his poems into French and acted as his amanuensis. Mathilde, Heineβs wife, tolerated the relationship but avoided all contact with her. Mouche brightened the poetβs final days, inspired the most moving love poems he ever penned, and wrote down some of his late verse to Heineβs own dictation.
Offering a personal, poignant, intimate look at the final eight months of Heineβs life in Paris, Mouche: The Last Days of Heinrich Heine will surprise and enchant all admirers of the great German lyric poet and all music lovers.
This edition contains short biographies of the characters mentioned in the text, as well as all the poems that Heine wrote about Mouche and Mathilde.

About the Author
Camille Selden was the nom de plume of Elise Krinitz (1825β96), a German-born novelist, biographer, translator and literary critic who spent most of her life in France. She is best remembered for her role as companion and muse to Heinrich Heine during the last eight months of his life, an experience she recounted in The Last Days of Heinrich Heine (1884).
Heinrich Heine (1797β1856) is one of the towering figures of nineteenth-century German poetry. His radical political views led to many of his works being banned by the German authorities, and he lived as an exile in France for most of his adult life. His early poetry was famously set to music by composers such as Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn, among others.
