Finding my way through cancer, and the New Zealand backcountry
A cancer diagnosis
A love of hiking…
One woman’s journey of resilience and rediscovery
When Verity was diagnosed with vulvar cancer in 2025, her world stopped. But in the middle of fear, uncertainty, and major surgery, she found one constant: the mountains.
From backcountry huts to alpine ridgelines, I Walked It Off is a raw, honest and often humorous memoir about living with lichen sclerosus, facing a cancer diagnosis, and learning to trust her body – and herself – again.
This is a story about more than survival. It is about showing up, putting one foot in front of the other, and discovering that healing is not a straight line; it is a long walk in the wild.
Funny, fierce and deeply human, this is one woman’s journey of courage, connection and walking it off.

About the Author
Verity Jackson is a New Zealand writer, videographer, and outdoor storyteller. Her writing and photography have been published in Wilderness Magazine more than five times, and she was interviewed on the Aotearoa Adventures Podcast in January 2026, discussing vulvar cancer, tramping, and hut bagging in New Zealand.
She was a Final 10 recipient in the 2026 Outdoor Photostory Competition and won the Federated Mountain Clubs (FMC) 2026 Love Our Huts video competition. Through writing, photography, and film, she shares stories celebrating New Zealand’s backcountry and the people who explore it.
Verity is an active member of the Methven and Districts Tramping Club and Geraldine Tramping Club. She maintains a hiking-focused website and has built an engaged audience through Instagram and YouTube. Drawing on her lived experience of lichen sclerosus and stage 1a vulvar squamous cell carcinoma, Verity combines personal narrative with a deep connection to New Zealand’s wild places. This is her first book.
