Down Under Ditties: Rhymes of Our Times 2025 is a witty follow-up by David Conway Hopkins ("Dr DC"), inspired by New Zealand Herald headlines. Description

Down Under Ditties: Rhymes of Our Times 2025 is a witty and topical collection of poems by David Conway Hopkins, also known as “Dr DC”, continuing his popular “ditty-a-day” project inspired by news stories from the print edition of the New Zealand Herald.

Each short rhyme was inspired by a headline or story from the New Zealand Herald, capturing the spirit of everyday life and current affairs across Aotearoa during 2024. From politics and policy debates to sport, local controversies and the quirks of everyday Kiwi life, Hopkins turns the year’s news into light-hearted reflections with a sharp satirical edge.

His “ditty-a-day” project has grown into a lively poetic chronicle – clever, funny and distinctly Kiwi, offering readers both laughter and moments of thoughtful recognition. Blending rhyme, humour and social observation, Down Under Ditties 2025 is the kind of book that belongs within easy reach – the perfect way to give yourself a break from your mobile phone, while the day’s news rhymes, amuses and occasionally makes you think.

The Iliad

When Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017—revealing the ancient poem in a contemporary idiom that was "fresh, unpretentious and lean" (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)—critics lauded it as "a revelation" (Susan Chira, New York Times) and "a cultural landmark" (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an...
