This work seeks to introduce the reader to the life and works of Oscar Wilde, focusing in particular on the period 1890 to 1895. Earlier works from the 1880s are also represented to give a balanced view of the motivating forces in his work as a poet, lecturer, journalist, and a short story writer.
It considers in depth an important theme in understanding Wilde - the politics of the late 19th-century relating to Ireland and homosexuality and surveys Wilde's philosophy through an analysis of his various non-fictional writings.
Critical interpretations of his major work are offered in chronological order and an account of his letters is included.
