This book may appeal to you if you enjoy thought-provoking narratives with an environmental focus, where a group of children embark on a summer adventure that leads to deep reflections on the adult world's failures. Its compelling blend of sharp wit and dark themes offers both a coming-of-age tale and a critical examination of societal issues, making it a powerful read.

Book Hero thinking about your next read

A brilliant, indelible novel of teenage alienation and adult complacency in a world whose climate and culture are unravelling.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Pulitzer Prize finalist Lydia Millet's sublime new novel—her first since the National Book Award long-listed Sweet Lamb of Heaven—follows a group of twelve eerily mature children on a forced vacation with their families at a sprawling lakeside mansion.

Contemptuous of their parents, who pass their days in a stupor of liquor, drugs, and sex, the children feel neglected and suffocated at the same time. When a destructive storm descends on the summer estate, the group's ringleaders—including Eve, who narrates the story—decide to run away, leading the younger ones on a dangerous foray into the apocalyptic chaos outside.

As the scenes of devastation begin to mimic events in the dog-eared picture Bible carried around by her beloved little brother, Eve devotes herself to keeping him safe from harm.

A Children's Bible is a prophetic, heartbreaking story of generational divide—and a haunting vision of what awaits us on the far side of Revelation.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Lydia Millet's A Children's Bible is a powerful dystopian novel that has resonated with many for its timely themes and engaging narrative. Critics have praised its exploration of environmental apocalypse and climate change denial woven into a story where children are left to fend for themselves amid societal collapse. The novel's ability to combine humour, satire, and a sobering look at generational responsibility has received acclaim, with many reviewers highlighting its relevance and emotional impact in today's world.
