Description

Cora loves the smell of books. She loves the stories they contain and the worlds of imagination they open...

But when it’s time to read aloud in class, Cora gets stuck. Stuck on the first word. And on the second. The harder she concentrates, the foggier each word feels.

And when her friends move on to bigger books, Cora is left behind and her love of stories starts to fade...

Why you'll love this book...

Dyslexia Representation: International evidence suggests around 20 per cent, or one to five children in every Australian classroom, has mild, moderate, or severe dyslexia or is a struggling reader. The book offers vital representation for young readers.
Storytelling First: While the themes are there to be explored, this is first and foremost a captivating story that all children will relate to in different ways.
Understanding Through Story: Books like Hannah’s foster open conversations between children and their parents or carers, breaking down stigmas and creating supportive environments. The book also aims to help kids understand that dyslexia is not a barrier to success but rather a unique way of learning.
Award-Winning Creator: Hannah has cemented her place as one of Australia’s best-loved picture book creators. Jetty Jumping (2021) was a CBCA Book of the Year winner and has become a modern classic for Australian families.

Perfect for...

Children aged 4 to 8 who love stories about books, libraries and strong emotions
Children with dyslexia and their families
Classroom use as a conversation starter around learning differences, dyslexia and neurodiversity
Classroom use as a conversation starter around books, literature and literacy

About the Author

Hannah Sommerville is a children’s picture book illustrator who lives and works on the South Coast of NSW. She began illustrating in 2010 after the arrival of her first child, who she credits with reintroducing her to the world of picture books. Since then, Hannah has enjoyed creating vivid details in hopes of capturing the imagination of children. These details are drawn from her family life and her own childhood memories. Toys and trinkets from home often hide among the pages of her books.

She has won multiple awards, including CBCA 2022 Book of the Year – Early Childhood for Jetty Jumping (written by Andrea Rowe).
