Are Black Men Doomed?

Series: Debating Race
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Are Black Men Doomed? investigates the societal narratives that portray Black men as inherently problematic and explores how these damaging views have persisted over time. Alford A. Young, Jr. challenges the common focus on what Black men must do to improve their lives, instead highlighting the importance of recognising and valuing Black men's own voices. The book argues for a transformative approach that demands society re-examine its limited perspectives, fostering reinterpretation and redemption to enhance prospects for Black men.

Life for too many African American men is a battle with extreme disadvantage, a fight for survival, and a struggle for dignity in a society which labels them a "problem. Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Life for too many African American men is a battle with extreme disadvantage, a fight for survival, and a struggle for dignity in a society which labels them a "problem." For more than 30 years, most of the effort put toward addressing the crisis of Black men has centred on what they must do to improve their condition. Without neglecting that perspective, Are Black Men Doomed? radically shifts the focus.

This urgent intervention explores how a damning portrait of Black men as incorrigibly pernicious has been built and persists, and how the voice of these men themselves has been ignored. It astutely argues that improving the prospects for Black men requires that society fully come to terms with the narrow and incomplete vision it has sustained about these men. It then shows us the means to hear, understand, and value them, offering a new vision rooted in reinterpretation and redemption.

  • Is Science Racist?
Every arena of science has its own flash-point issues—chemistry and poison gas, physics and the atom bomb—and genetics has had a troubled history with race.
