Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese is an enthralling and exotic saga that spans five decades and three continents, weaving a tapestry rich with themes of forbidden love, betrayal, and the enduring bonds of family. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Ethiopia and touching multiple continents, this novel delves deep into the intricate lives of twin brothers, Marion and Shiva Stone, born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon.

Raised in Ethiopia amidst political turmoil and societal change, the brothers find themselves parted by a powerful betrayal. Marion flees his homeland to become a surgeon in America, whilst Shiva remains, and their destinies unfurl in ways both striking and serendipitous. Their journeys explore the complexities of family secrets, the unforgiving nature of fate, and the pursuit of redemption through medicine where no ailment is merely physical.

The prose, as acknowledged by The Times, is "a huge, rich, ambitious tapestry of a novel...tremendous", filled with a gravity that ensures the story’s place as a modern classic. The Daily Telegraph commends the work as possessing "a gravity and beauty in his writing that sets it apart from much contemporary fiction". Marion and Shiva's story underscores the idea that where silk and steel fail, the power of storytelling must prevail, transcending the divides of time and space.

Cutting For Stone has resonated with readers globally, with over one million copies sold worldwide. This beloved masterpiece from the talented Abraham Verghese is also from the author of Oprah Winfrey's Book Club pick, The Covenant of Water.

Immerse yourself in this epic narrative and discover why it has become a cornerstone in contemporary literature.
