Tim's Street Fighter Movie Review
Disclaimer - I am a massive Street Fighter fan…. Love the games, got the toys & have a Street Fighter ‘shrine’ in my garage… I even entered the NZ Street Fighter Hyper Fighting Championship’s last year - got absolutely wasted but was fun 🙂
So when a new SF movie was announced I was naturally excited… until I saw the trailers ☹️
They looked decidedly average… my 14 year old son (who is ironically better at SF than me) thought the same too..
So it was under this premise that we went & watched the movie… not expecting much….
But….I’m really glad to say that we were both happy to be proven wrong…it was good!
Not win an Oscar good but enjoy some popcorn & be entertained for two hours good. Granted - some of the jokes fell flat - but the story was ok & the best part was that the characters felt pretty authentic & true to how we thought they would be based upon from the game…not like the 90’s Van Damme ‘atrocity’ of a SF film - IMHO.
Unexpected ‘true to form’ favourite character - Dhalsim! 😉
We even thought it was better than the recent Mortal Kombat films… well worth checking out - especially if you like or know the games.
Bring on the Toys!! 🙂
4 Shoryuken’s out of 5! 💨💨💨💨
P.S If you want another cool SF movie - check out the animated one from '94....definitely worth a watch...
Shirl's Street Fighter Movie Review
I always have my doubts when it comes to movies based on video games. There are only a couple that come to mind for me that worked well and have proven me wrong: Mortal Kombat Annihilation (don't judge me) and the 2026 release of Resident Evil. And yes, we've all been burnt by the Street Fighter franchise before, thanks to the 1994 film. I remember it being such a huge deal with well known stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue and Raul Julia. So I went into this remake with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
The cast is packed with well known actors, musicians and wrestlers but the real pull for me was the director Kitao Sakurai. If you are not familiar with his work, he is best known for his writing and directing alongside comedian Eric Andrē who I'm a huge fan of, he's hilarious. I thought the film was fun, the storyline made sense this time, the cast were entertaining and the soundtrack was epic! Best of all the fighting scenes were actually pretty good and there were nods throughout the film to the game and the animated movie.
This was a fun movie to watch especially on the big screen and with an audience, don't take it to seriously and I'm sure you'll love it too!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - The New Street Fighter Movie Is Made for Us!
It’s been ages since we had Street Fighter on the big screen, so I was honestly just stoked to see how they’d handle an IP that’s been around for nearly 40 years. All I wanted was something that respected the games and brought back those old arcade vibes.
And man, it delivered. Director Kitao Sakurai didn't try to force some deep, overly complicated lore on us. He just let the martial arts do the talking. The fights actually have real weight to them, and the fight sequences didn't look like cheap CGI. They felt legit, fun, and wild!
For a game with such a long history, this movie hits all the right spots with respect. Sure, when you've got a roster this massive, some characters are bound to get less screen time. Guile basically gets reduced to a glorified cameo, which was a bit of a bummer since he’s my go-to along with Chun-Li. But every time Guile, Chun-Li, or Dan popped up on screen, the whole room lit up. Dan Hibiki’s banter had people cracking up, and even with brief screen time, their interactions with the rest of the cast just clicked. Plus, with a sequel already greenlit, I reckon Guile will get a proper storyline next time around anyway.
By the time the credits rolled, the whole room was buzzing. It felt less like a movie screening and more like catching up with old mates to relive our teenage arcade days. I walked out of there keen to run straight home, boot up my console, and invite the boys over for a session. If you ever spent your pocket money in a noisy arcade, ignore the snobby reviews. This film was made for us.
I can't wait to go back to the cinema for round 2! 💥
