The Raupo Book of Maori Proverbs, authored by A. W. Reed, Timoti Karetu, and A.E. Brougham, is a timeless collection that delves into the rich heritage of Māori culture. This extensive volume compiles several hundred traditional Māori proverbs, or whakataukī, offering a profound glimpse into the unique philosophy, humour and pragmatism of the Māori people. Each saying encapsulates various aspects of Māori life, from wisdom and knowledge to love and nature, providing valuable insights for writers, storytellers and anyone engaging in a Māori setting.

The proverbs in this book are meticulously categorised under numerous diverse headings, making it easy for readers to find relevant sayings. Each whakataukī is accompanied by an English translation and a detailed explanation, giving context and deeper understanding. Whether you are a novice looking to learn more about Māori culture or an expert seeking a reliable reference, this comprehensive and credible book will serve as an indispensable resource.

Additionally, the exploration of each proverb exposes readers to the core values that shape Māori society. The commentary provided by the authors highlights the timelessness and relevance of these sayings in contemporary life, bridging the gap between traditional wisdom and modern-day application.

The authors, A. W. Reed, a notable figure in publishing, Timoti Karetu, a highly respected scholar of te reo Māori and Māori culture, and A.E. Brougham, an experienced writer, combine their expertise to present these proverbs with clarity and authenticity. Their collaborative efforts ensure that each saying is not only accurately translated but also culturally respectful and insightful.

The Raupo Book of Maori Proverbs is more than just a collection of sayings; it is a reflection of the Māori worldview and a celebration of their linguistic artistry. The book is a treasure trove for anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Māori wisdom and its applications in daily life.
