1421: The Year China Discovered the World by Gavin Menzies presents a revolutionary argument that challenges the traditional history of global exploration. On 8 March 1421, an immense fleet, the largest the world had ever witnessed, set sail from China. These mighty ships, some stretching nearly five hundred feet in length, were under the command of Emperor Zhu Di's loyal eunuch admirals. Their mission was to voyage to the ends of the earth, seeking to collect tribute from distant barbarians and unite the world under the harmonious principles of Confucianism.

Their incredible journey, lasting over two years, saw them traverse the globe, making groundbreaking discoveries and leaving their mark on various continents. However, upon the fleet’s return, China had dramatically shifted its stance on exploration. Emperor Zhu Di had lost control, and the empire began a long period of self-imposed isolation. The grand ships were abandoned to decay, and the records of their breathtaking journey were intentionally destroyed.

Among the boldest assertions in the book is that the Chinese had circumnavigated the globe nearly a century before Magellan; that they had made contact with the Americas seventy years before Columbus; and that they had reached Australia some three hundred fifty years before Cook. This provocative narrative is supported through Menzies' exhaustive fifteen-year research.

Menzies presents incontrovertible evidence to back his claims: ancient maps that predate European discoveries, precise navigational techniques, astronomical knowledge, and detailed accounts from both Chinese explorers and later European navigators. He also uncovers artefacts left by the fleet, from sunken junks to ornate votive offerings, which the Chinese sailors left wherever they landed as a tribute to Shao Lin, the goddess of the sea.

1421 is an enthralling exploration that not only offers an alternative view of the history of global exploration but also proposes a rewriting of history itself. Hailed as a classic, this extraordinary narrative captivates readers with its compelling blend of adventure, discovery, and historical reevaluation, rendering a detailed insight into the extraordinary journey of China’s 15th-century fleet and their astonishing achievements.
