Summary

Angola Janga recounts the establishment of a refuge for runaway slaves in the late 16th century. This independent kingdom stood as a symbol of hope amidst brutal oppression. Through stark black ink and chiaroscuro panel art, Marcelo D'Salete vividly portrays the flight of fugitive slaves, violent Portuguese raids, and the internal conflicts that shaped this fragile society.

An acclaimed cartoonist tells the harrowing, life-affirming history of a Brazilian slave state.

Description

An independent kingdom of runaway slaves founded in the late 16th century, Angola Janga was a beacon of freedom in a land plagued with oppression. In stark black ink and chiaroscuro panel compositions, Marcelo D'Salete brings history to life; the painful stories of fugitive slaves on the run, the brutal raids by Portuguese colonists, and the tense power struggles within this precarious kingdom. At turns heartbreaking and empowering, Angola Janga sheds light on a long-overlooked moment of resistance against oppression.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Praised for its striking black-and-white illustrations, the graphic novel uses diverse pen and brush techniques to reveal the harrowing realities of slavery in Brazil. Critics commend D'Salete's unflinching depiction of historical brutality and his skill in bringing this overlooked story of resistance to light.
