See moreLike Nowhere Else on Earth is a pictorial and literary love-letter to Scott Reef with images and words motivated by the urgency of what is at stake in the fight for the protection of our oceans.
Scott Reef might be Australia's greatest living secret.
Located off Western Australia's north-west coast, Scott Reef is Australia's largest stand-alone coral reef atoll, but very few people have ever been there. One of the last remaining vestiges of an ancient reef that once spanned Australia's west coast, Scott Reef's magnificent isolation means that ocean wildlife has continued to flourish, little touched by direct human activity. Only now is Scott Reef under direct threat from undersea gas drilling and extraction, bringing an urgency to calls to protect this astonishing place.
Like Nowhere Else on Earth is a pictorial and literary love-letter to Scott Reef with images and words motivated by the urgency of what is at stake in the fight for our oceans.
Featuring the magnificent work of Kimberley-based photographer Wendy Mitchell, who was hosted on a rare expedition to Scott Reef by Greenpeace, this remarkable work includes contributions from some of Australia's most prominent voices, including Peter Garrett, Fiona Stanley, and Mick Dodson, along with a cast of scientists, artists, environmentalists, and citizens. It is also a project of generations, with emerging voices appearing in print for the first time.
Those fortunate enough to have visited this coral haven speak with aweβa life-changing experience to witness oceans so full of thriving life, including endangered pygmy blue whales, migrating whale sharks, mysterious dusky sea snakes, and a genetically unique population of green sea turtles that nests nowhere else on the planet.
This book invites the reader to come beneath the waves and join the journey to protect Scott Reef, brought to life in exquisite pictures and powerful words; a place like nowhere else on earth.
