Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan presents a powerful and profound exploration of the importance of scientific thinking in a world increasingly swayed by pseudoscience and superstition. In this insightful and thought-provoking work, Sagan addresses a crucial question: How can we make intelligent decisions about our technology-driven lives if we cannot discern between the myths of pseudoscience and the empirical truths of science?

Throughout the book, Sagan casts a broad net through history and culture, authoritatively debunking celebrated fallacies such as witchcraft, faith healing, demons, and UFOs. He warns that in today’s so-called information age, pseudoscience is more prevalent than ever, with stories of alien abduction, past-life channeling, and communal hallucinations attracting growing attention and respect. Through his lucid eloquence, Sagan demonstrates that the lure of unreason is not merely a harmless diversion but a perilous descent into darkness that endangers our most basic freedoms.

With a spirited defense of science and rational thinking, The Demon-Haunted World makes a compelling argument for the critical role of scientific literacy, not only in our pursuit of truth but also for the well-being of our democratic institutions. Sagan’s remarkable ability to convey complex scientific concepts in a clear and enchanting manner turns every page into a manifesto for critical thinking and skepticism.

About the Author

Carl Sagan served as the David Duncan Professor of Astronomy and Space Sciences and Director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University. He played a leading role in the Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo spacecraft expeditions, for which he received the NASA Medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and (twice) for Distinguished Public Service. His Emmy- and Peabody-winning television series, Cosmos, became the most widely watched series in the history of American public television. The accompanying book, also called Cosmos, is one of the bestselling science books ever published in the English language. Dr. Sagan received the Pulitzer Prize, the Oersted Medal, and many other awards-including twenty honorary degrees from American colleges and universities-for his contributions to science, literature, education, and the preservation of the environment. In their posthumous award to Dr. Sagan of their highest honor, the National Science Foundation declared that his "research transformed planetary science . . . his gifts to mankind were infinite." Dr. Sagan died on December 20, 1996.
